Grape Street - 7/16/05

Not Just Monkey Business

Blue Sinatra was back at Grape Street for some more fun. As they were preparing to take the stage the usual video rotation on the projector was replaced by some videos shot at their rehearsal space complete with 8-bit graphic titles. The horn section made their first appearance there, but with a different trumpet player, Mr. Adam. With their regular player Crystal working on a singing career, there may be a bit of a rotation. Beach balls were flung into the crowd during the set by what looked like a gorilla with a T-shirt (actually a member of another band). A bit less messy than the Abilene show, but they could give people a nice bump while they were trying to take pictures. Since the show was running late their final song, the signature "Unicron", was cut. Instead they ended up finishing with the Kool & The Gang funk classic “Jungle Boogie”. Opening for them once again was Mama Winslow. Hearing them a second time helped me realize that they were dirtier than I thought. Not my cup of tea. Finally Blue Sinatra's good friends Case of the Mondays, a punk-ska fusion. I have never been a ska fan, but these guys do it right. Their horn section got into it; I had never seen someone swing a trombone around like it was a guitar before. The King of Rhyme got up and did a few numbers with them, including a few duets (or mini-rap battles) with their singer, Gus Lovely. As an extra treat, The King and the rhythm section of the Mondays formed their old group Fist To The Dome and brought back their old days, before the start of two local powerhouses.

It's summertime, why not have a ball?
